We had so much fun! The kids had Spring Break last week so at the end of the week we drove five hours to South Cumberland State Park in Tennessee. The park is really a collection of several parks and natural areas over several counties. It is situated on the Cumberland Plateau, which is made of sandstone. With this, God sculpts all sorts of amazing waterfalls, arches, caves, cliffs and collections of boulders.
Most of the camping at South Cumberland State Park is primitive camping, where you have to carry your supplies and hike to the campsite. The hiking distance to the camping sites range from a quarter mile to several miles, so you wouldn’t have to hike far. But we aren’t prepared to carry our entire camp on our backs yet, though we may want to try it some day. The backcountry camping is free, but we realize it would take a subsantial investment of specialized light-weight equipment to be able to carry our camp to the campground.
Thankfully there is one developed campground within the state park area, Foster Falls TVA, which even has warm showers! We arrived on Friday and this turns out to be the first day they were open for the season. Since it was early in the day, we got the pick of the campground and chose the very best campsite (in our opinion!). It was at the end of the campground, fairly private and the largest site to hold our family-sized tent. We were also tickled to discover a little stream flowing next to our site that was so much fun to play in and hop over. There were plenty of trees from which to hang our hammocks and, since we were the first people here for the season, unlimited firewood at our doorstep.
Most of the time, the weather here has been cool and today we’re having thunderstorms. But this past weekend when we were camping, it was close to 70 during the day and 50 at night, beautiful and sunny, with not a drop of rain! We really felt blessed. Sometimes the daily grind of life is hard and tiring, so it was very refreshing to get away, experience a change of pace and scenery. I hardly even looked at my iphone the whole weekend! It was really great and we are thankful for our gift from God.
